At Kidston, kids are free to be themselves and to explore their place in the universe in a safe and nurturing environment. Situated on more than 500 acres of pristine woods and waters around beautiful Long Lake, Kidston gives kids the opportunity to disconnect from technology, reconnect with play, experience community, and explore values.

We believe in:

  • The power of play

  • Joining together

  • The beauty of diversity

  • Warm welcomes

  • The value of challenge

  • Trying new things

  • Everyday celebrations

  • Lifelong growth

  • Fresh starts

  • Learning from each other

  • The healing power of the natural world

  • The joy of dirty hands and smiling faces

All our on-site summer programs include: supervised paddling, lakeside swimming, and water activities; campfires and singsongs; arts and crafts; outdoor education; and faith exploration.

We offer a separate, specialized session (Tadpole Camp) for our youngest campers, while our multiage sessions for campers between 7 and 15 years, allow siblings to attend together, while providing tailored, age-appropriate activities and programs. Leadership programs are available for campers aged 15 to 17 years.

Kidston is owned by the United Church of Canada and has been operating for more than 50 years.

We welcome and honour campers from all faith traditions, backgrounds, and gender identities.

Subsidies and sponsorship options are available - please contact registrar@campkidston.com for more information.

Camp Facilities

Surrounded by pristine woods, Camp Kidston offers an oasis of nature in the northeastern corner of HRM. Swimming, canoeing, or just watching the sun shimmering on the surface, Long Lake is a big part of Camp Kidston and what camp has to offer.

Our main building, Wilson Lodge, houses a modern kitchen, a large open dining hall/play area, and areas for indoor programs. Our 4 rustic cabins each accommodate up to 16 campers and 4 counsellors. The Wash House contains fully equipped washroom facilities and showering areas. The in-floor heating makes this comfortable to use summer and winter!

The staff quarters is a heated, 6 bedroom building for 9 adults with 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, and 3 common rooms.

For those interested in off-season facility rental, Kidston is well suited to accommodate adult retreats, meetings, reunions, or other group events in a peaceful, serene environment.

Camp Staff

Our summer staff includes trained and certified lifeguards and canoe instructors. All staff are hired by the Board of Directors and undergo thorough screening and training to ensure our campers have the best camping experience possible.

Camp FAQs

Is Kidston an accredited camp?
Yes, we are accredited by the Camping Association of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

How long is the drive to Kidston?
Kidston is a 75 minute drive from HRM and 60 minutes from Truro.

Where is the camp located?
We are located on Long Lake, on the Mooseland Road (also called the Moose River Road) near Middle Musquodoboit.

I see Kidston is run by the United Church of Canada - Do I have to be a member of a church to attend Kidston?
No! While we are operated through the United Church of Canada, we welcome people from all faith or non-faith traditions. We do include some activities focused on exploring faith-based values and some of our songs reflect those values. However, most of what we do involves just play-old non-denominational fun and games.

My child would love to come to camp, but I just can’t afford it right now…
We believe that no camper should ever be excluded because of financial concerns. Through the generous help of our many supporters and donors, we are able to offer sponsorships to many campers. Don’t hesitate to email our Registrar (Registrar@campkidston.com) to talk about sponsorship options.

Does Kidston provide transportation to and from camp?
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide transportation. If this is an issue for you, please let us know: we can sometimes help parents connect with other families who may be able to car pool.

My child has some unique needs. Can they / should they still come to Kidston?
This is a very important question! We want every camper to feel welcomed and successful at camp. In general, the better we understand your child’s unique needs, the better we can meet them. At the same time, we realize they may be some circumstances where we cannot safely meet the needs of all children. If you are wondering whether Kidston will be a good fit for your child this summer, please do not hesitate to contact us to talk this through.

Our single registration fee covers food, materials, and activities for all family members. Family camp also allows a unique opportunity for young and/or first-time campers to get to know our staff, settle in to their surroundings, and test their wings with parents nearby, before deciding if they are ready for more independence. The end of our July Family Camp runs directly into the start of our Tadpole Camp for 5- to 7-year-olds, to allow for a smooth transition for our youngest campers.

Weather permitting, Phase 1 typically involves an overnight outtrip to one of the wilderness campsites on our grounds.
