Timber Ridge Camp is celebrating its 61st summer this year.Only 90 miles west of Washington, DC, Timber Ridge is located in the beautiful Shenandoah Mountains where the base of the North Mountain and the shores of the Cacapon River meet to surround out 200-acre campsite. Our coed, ACA accredited camp offers full and half sessions with individual free-choice programming for campers with every kind of interest.
With over 40 activities at Timber Ridge, we have developed a free-choice scheduling system which allows children to pursue all of their interests. We have activities for every kind of camper - from flying circus trapeze and Broadway-style plays to water skiing and go karts.
Timber Ridge campers are recognized as individuals and encouraged to pursue their goals through every experience. Our camp is ideally sized with roughly 275 children in each session. With this number of campers attending Timber Ridge, we truly know every child and they do not get "lost" in the numbers. While our largest contingent of campers comes from South Florida and the Baltimore-Washington Area, we are well represented with children from all around the country and world.
At Timber Ridge we pride ourselves in the fact that we provide the most exciting and caring environment in the camping industry.Under the supervision of our qualified, diligent and nurturing staff, children blossom at camp.
Timber Ridge is your child's home away from home.
While Timber Ridge has built its outstanding reputation on dynamic programming and leadership, our facility is truly in a class of it own. Situated on 200 acres in the beautiful Shenandoah Mountains and surrounded by the rambling rapids of the Cacapon river, our surroundings are perfect for a summer camp.
Over the past 50 years, we have strived to make our facility the best in the industry. Every year we build and renovate to keep Timber Ridge looking great. All children sleep in cabins that are fully equipped with bathrooms and showers.
Our newest sleeping facility is the “lodge”. This magnificent 5,000 square ft. building can house up to 60 people in 18 different rooms each with private bathrooms and showers. There is a spacious common area, used for lounging and special programming.
What truly makes our facility great is all of the incredible activity areas that we have developed. As you can see from the programs listed on this page, there is barely enough time to do everything at our camp. Some highlights include our huge 20,000 sq ft. gym with indoor, full court basketball, circus and an extensive gymnastics center, the Almost Heaven Theatre which also includes rooms for photography, dance, martial arts and physical fitness, our state of the art Skate Park, climbing wall, and a substantial horseback riding area. The Cacapon River is a perfect site for canoeing, tubing and rafting. If that isn’t enough, we have recently added a paved go kart track plus a high ropes course with a zip line. The list is always getting bigger!!

The Timber Ridge staff love kids and live for fun - they're an integral part of the camping experience. The Greenberg’s travel to some of the best colleges and universities in the country and hand-pick our staff with the right balance of personality, responsibility, and expertise. Professionals head up each of our activity areas, and the adult administrators have years of camping and educational experience.
With a camper/counselor ratio of 4:1, there are plenty of staffers on hand to take care of every child's needs. At least one is always in a cabin after bedtime for round-the-clock supervision.
Timber Ridge has a professional staff of tutors in most academic fields as well as an accredited program in English as a Second Language. The encouragement of our dedicated staff, coupled with a host of challenging activities, builds confidence and spirit in each and every camper.
What time do campers get up in the morning and when is bedtime?
Wake-up for all of our campers is 7:45. However for some of the older children, we do have a few special days that they can sleep until 9:00. Bedtime varies by age as well. Our youngest campers are in bed by 9:00. As campers get older, their time for lights out gets progressively later, with teenage campers having lights out beginning at 10:30.
How do children get to camp?
Travel to camp is very easy do to our proximity to 5 major cities and Washington Dulles airport. Bus or van transportation is available through the camp to and from surrounding cities and states such as Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey. Those traveling by airplane are asked to fly into Dulles Airport outside Washington, D.C. An escort will be present on all major flights and camp representatives will be at the gate to meet our children once they get off the plane. A bus then takes them to Camp White Mountain and Camp Green Briar for the 90 minute ride to camp.
How many people are in each cabin?
Each cabin houses 6-12 campers with two or three counselors. Every cabins has full bath facilities, including several private showers, ample electrical outlets and separate cubbies for clothing.
Are campers put into bunks by age or grade?
Campers are usually grouped in cabins by grade that the camper just completed. Sometimes parents will request a placement by age. If your child wants to bunk with friends, we almost always are able to work it out.
Tell us a little about your staff.
The Timber Ridge staff is made up of seasoned, well-trained professionals and college students whose common bond is their love of children. Our specialists are recruited based on their success in their chosen field. During a typical summer, our staff return rate is well over 60%.
When do the campers pick their activities?
We schedule twice a summer on the first day of each session. Campers pick the schedule they will follow throughout the session. Sometime campers want to experience a different activity so we allow schedule changes every Friday.
Do campers ever get turned away from an activity they choose?
Never. A full time program director spends the day working with each child’s schedule to make sure they are getting the classes they wanted and to make sure that they have a diverse, exciting schedule.
How does the laundry work?
Every camper’s laundry is done and folded our own campgrounds once a week and returned the following day. The laundry is kept together by cabin and is sorted by the counselors and put into cubbies with the aid of their campers. Campers bring their own linens and blankets.
What type of medical care do you have?
We have three nurses manning our infirmaries plus a doctor in residence at all times. What’s more, there is a state of the art Medical Center located fifteen miles away from Winchester, VA. Our nurses are typically mothers themselves and understand the “T.L.C.” involved with caring for children.
What kind of camp trips do you offer?
Camp White Mountain and Camp Green Briar offers a variety of out of camp trips, some which are part of the program and others, which are optional. Bike trips, overnight canoeing trips, hiking, back packing; rappelling, etc. are examples of trips which children can sign up for, as they’re being offered at no additional cost. At some point in the summer, we invite campers to go roller skating in town and a highlight of every child’s summer is when we take the entire camp to a nearby amusement park. Again, this is part of the camp tuition. Optional trips, which do cost more money, include Washington, D.C., and white water rafting.
