Come to Northern Illinois University for summer camps that are truly different!

Campers with a passion for the visual arts, the theatre, or jazz get the time to focus on their art – and to learn from the very best teachers. Junior and senior high school students love these camps and many return year after year.

Campers enjoy six days of activities, sleep in newly renovated university residence halls, and eat in university dining facilities. Classes are taught on-campus by NIU faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and alumni. Each camp concludes with a final show that is open to the public.

These camps are limited in size and often fill before the discount deadline date of June 1. Don’t wait until the last minute to register! Check us out on Facebook at Summer in the Arts at Northern for photos of last year's fun and see what our campers say about last year's camps!

Camp Facilities

We are excited to announce that our campers are staying in the newly renovated Grant Tower C, which has been improved in all ways - bigger rooms, nicer rest room facilities, better lounges.  The rooms are air-conditioned and each room accommodates two campers. Campers are paired with someone about the same age, but are welcome to choose their own roommates. Note: Roommate requests are only honored if both campers make reciprocal requests. Meals are served in the residence hall cafeteria or in one of several restaurants in the Holmes Student Center.

Camp Staff

The instructors and counselors are NIU faculty, students, and alumni as well as area teachers, and they are the best in their field. They know a lot and they love to share their knowledge with others. Campers are supervised at all times; the ratio of adults to campers is about one to 12.

Camp FAQs

How big are the camps?
Our camps generally have between 80–95 campers. We keep them fairly small, so our campers will get lots of individual attention from the staff and can get to know each other.

Where is Northern Illinois University?
NIU is in DeKalb, Illinois, 65 miles west of Chicago and 45 miles southeast of Rockford. Directions to the campus and maps are available on this website.

Is there financial aid available for campers?
Yes, each camp offers NIU scholarships (worth $250) to campers who demonstrate financial need. The receipt application deadline for NIU's scholarships is May 1. Many ocal organizations also offer financial support for campers; check with local service groups, booster clubs, and your school guidance counselor.

Where do campers sleep and where do they eat their meals?
