Since 1955, Courage Center Camps have provided camp programs for youth and adults with disabilities. Campers learn to grow, make friends and have fun in safe and accessible natural settings. We serve children and adults with physical disabilities, and youth with speech, language and/or hearing impairments. Our camp staff members provide mentoring and role modeling, while making sure campers have a fun, safe experience. We offer:

  • family camps 
  • conference and retreat services
Camp Facilities
Camp Courage
Lies on 305 acres of beautiful lakeshore, woods and
fields near Maple Lake, Minn., about 50 miles west of
the Twin Cities. The Lakeside campus offers sessions
for youth, teens and adults with physical disabilities or
visual impairments in a modern, accessible setting. The
Woodland campus offers a wide range of therapeutic
camping sessions for children with speech, hearing
and language impairments and learning disabilities.
Courage North
Set amid 105 acres of towering pines on Lake George,
near Itasca State Park in northern Minn. Courage North
offers sessions for adults with physical disabilities and
youth and teens who are deaf or hard of hearing in
modern, accessible cabins and accessible facilities.
Families are welcome to tour the camp facilities before
the session begins. Please call the specific camp to
arrange a tour.

College, Career, & Technology

6/25/2009 to 7/3/2009 16 campers $1,000.00
Offered in cooperation with the University of Washington’s
DO-IT program.
Designed for teens who are interested in attending college or who are
ready to transition into a career. We blend traditional camp activities
with career exploration and skill-building. Campers can choose to
work on improving computer skills, learn more about assistive
technology, and visit at least one college campus tour. Campers can
also attend film school for video production, talk with former
campers who are now in careers, as well as college instructors. There’s
still plenty of time every day to do all the fun camp activities.

Paralympic Sports

Want to try some new sports? Improve your skills in your favorite
sports? Have fun with friends? National adapted sports experts bring
their talents to Camp Courage during this fun-filled learning session.
We focus on teaching Paralympic sports while having fun at camp!
Sports include: archery, basketball, tennis, kayaking, sailing, bocce ball,
water skiing, swimming, track and field, and more. Training provided
by the best of the best. Open to athletes of all skills and abilities.

Love sports, but not interested in Paralympic sports? Then this
session is for you! Choose one of several sports to concentrate on
and practice and compete with other campers. Camp staff provide

Vacation for Adults

Relax and enjoy the beauty of the Minnesota north woods and lakes.
Campers may choose from an array of activities – swimming, sailing,

A Superior Leadership Adventure

Sail on beautiful Lake Koronis and camp on Winther Island, near
Paynesville, Minnesota. Work as a crew and learn the basics of
sailing, and more importantly, the values of team work in a

Lead with Courage

Enjoy a fun-filled week of traditional camp activities such as sailing,
fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, digital photography, nature
and environmental studies, arts and crafts, and overnight camping.
In addition to having fun, campers learn social and leadership skills
and gain independence in a safe mentoring environment. Staff
includes students from Gallaudet University and Rochester Institute
of Technology for the Deaf. The program format has changed
this year with a shorter regular session and the option of an
additional five-day Boundary Waters canoe trip, Aug 3-7.

On the Road Again

Return to an old camp favorite – travel camp! We’ll pack up the
vans, tents, sleeping bags and head out to the Black Hills. This small
and hardy group will camp under the stars and see the sights of this
beautiful area of South Dakota. Participants must be able to transfer
to a manual wheelchair and direct their own personal care. Trained
staff will accompany the group.

Mini-vacation for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Adults

Enjoy the beauty of Northern Minnesota’s woods and lakes.
Participants can participate in activities such as fishing, kayaking,
canoeing, sailing and boating, biking and hiking, and field trips to
Itasca State Park. Evening activities include fun theme events and
time to visit with friends. Programming is coordinated by staff
members who are either deaf or hard of hearing or who are skilled in
American Sign Language. Our staffing ratio is 1:6. Participants need
to be physically independent.

Handiham Radio Camp

Enjoy a week of Ham radio fun and learning. Make new friends
while building an on-air community that continues after you leave
Radio Camp. Get a first Ham radio license or upgrade a current one,
or learn new operating skills. Keep abreast of the latest technology,
including assistive technology. Wireless internet access is available.
Instructors are experienced amateur radio operators from throughout
the nation. Trained staff members provide personal care assistance.
And, we leave plenty of time to take a break from studying and enjoy

Teen Session - Ages 13-17

Enjoy great camp activities, including swimming, horseback riding,
sailing and crafts while increasing camper’s self-confidence,
independence and leadership skills. Younger kids live together and
have more activities planned for them; older kids live together and
have more input into their daily schedule and activities.

Literacy

This unique session is for struggling readers with disabilities who
would like to be better readers. Educators, under the direction of
national literacy experts David Koppenhaver, Ph.D., and Karen
Erickson, Ph.D., work with campers to determine literacy needs and
then plan strategies which address those needs. Informal descriptive
reports of assessments and interventions are provided to families and
campers to take back to their home schools. But, we still leave plenty
of time for good, old-fashioned camp fun. A video of this session is
used for teaching purposes, so we ask participants to sign a media
release for acceptance into this session. Campers must be able to walk
and be independent with self-cares.

Augmentative & Alternative Communication - Ages 10

For youngsters who are experienced users of AAC devices. Learn the
power of communication while having fun. Supervised by experienced
speech/language pathologists. Campers participate in all the usual fun
camp activities like horseback riding, crafts, water activities and more,
but work to integrate AAC devices in all aspects of camp. Clinical
reports are sent home to assist families and caregivers in taking full
advantage and continuing use of AAC devices.

Augmentative & Alternative Communication - Adult

For successful users of augmentative and alternative communication
(AAC) devices who now want to learn conversation skills. Campers
learn the art of small talk and work to increase their communication
speech using AAC devices. Supervised by experienced occupational
and speech therapists. Specific AAC activities include e-mail/
computer links, ice breakers, a group project and Improvisation
Night. Campers practice their communication skills each afternoon
and evening while participating in fun camp activities. Limited
to 12 campers.

A new session for adults with Aspergers syndrome. Have fun while
learning social and life skills, and then apply these new skills
immediately in real-life situations. Morning classes focus on
understanding verbal and non-verbal communication. Participate in
resume writing and practice job interviews, and work on improving
time management. Afternoons are filled with all the usual fun camp
activities. After dinner, speakers and discussions allow informal
networking and time to hang out with friends.
