The Camp was founded in 1925. It has nurtured young people who have sent grandchildren back to the place where they found a meaningful part of themselves. The camp was founded in a simpler time, but the faster world was coming, and parents felt that time in the woods apart from school, and familiar roles and places would help their children grow. The American summer camp, with its cabins and fire circles and traditions was born. It was created in a time when there was less pressure and strain on children.
The camp has not been reinvented. Campers follow the same trails, paddle the same unspoiled rivers, cheer the same achievements and wear mud on their shoes with the same freedom. The camp was founded by an educator, Chief Abbott, and the present owners, both professional educators, continue that legacy.
In its 80 plus summers the camp has nurtured many traditions handed on each year from one set of young hands to another. A camper from another generation who strolls up the road, and many do, will hear and see many sounds and sights familiar from his or her summer. The core of the camp remains as always a belief that children grow when their days are challenging and where they can help shape their own best and longest-lasting memories. A Woodcraft summer is truly an investment in a responsible, caring adult. That is what motivated the founder, and motivates the camp today. It is a place that helps young people grow into responsible, caring world citizens - without them ever knowing that that is what is happening.
Woodcraft is situated in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. We have two private lakes that offer great swimming, fishing, and paddling opportunities for all skill levels. We also have 1.5 miles of shoreline of the famous Moose River that is used frequently by our campers. We have over 100 miles of mountain biking trails that can be explored from our fleet of current model Trek mountain bikes that will be fit by a trained counselor.
Older campers take a short drive north to the Adirondack High Peaks where they will experience breathtaking views and test their newly learned tripping skills on 4,000 ft+ mountains.
Younger campers will take advantage of canoe trips down the Fulton Chain of Lakes, Moose River, and also hike Bald Mountain which offers great panoramas of the trips they have just taken.
Each summer we seek out exceptional young people to help lead our camp. We pride ourselves on offering top-flight instruction in each of the many activities at the camp. If you have special skills and enjoy teaching and leading, please get in touch with us as soon as possible. Our positions fill well before the summer season.
You can learn a little about this summer`s great crew here. Woodcraft is set on nearly 300 acres of forests, fields and pristine lakes. We have over 3 miles of unspoiled shoreline, 1.5 miles of wilderness river frontage, and direct access to unique system of trails and overnight camping sites in the Adirondack Park. Our facility is very special, but it is our staff that makes the camp extraordinary. This means all of the people you will work with here are bringing something extra to what they do. The setting and staff makes for a great way to spend your summer. We have approximately 100-120 campers, a 3.5-to-1 camper to staff ratio, and an average cabin size of five. This adds up to a pressure-free, fun and supportive atmosphere. You will have time to get to know and work with individual campers. You will have the support of a highly skilled and caring administration and staff. John and Dave Leach, the Director/Owners, have more than 30 years of Woodcraft experience. They hold Master’s Degrees in Education and teach and coach in the local public school system. Alex Bumpas, the program director is also a schoolteacher in the Louisville Kentucky area. Many of our other key staff members are professional educators with years of experience both in education and in the wilderness setting.
