Campers have the option of attending either a half day camp or a full day camp each week at our five main locations.
Creative Writing The first half of the day starts at 9:30am and goes on till 12:30pm. Participants will enjoy a morning of creative writing fun each day focusing on the theme of the week. They will learn how to write stories in various genre, poems and plays.
Academic Writing This session starts after lunch at 1:30pm and goes on till 4:30pm. Students will be taught the fundamentals of the English language, while they focus on writing strong essays.
Students can attend either the creative writing camp, the academic writing camp, or both.
Below is a short description of the camps for different age groups.
Beginning Creative Writing For students entering the 2nd,3rd,and 4th grade: Students will be introduced to the concepts of story writing, poetry and playwriting. They will also learn about contextual illustration.
Intermediate Creative Writing For students entering the 4th, 5th,and 6th, grade: In addition to concepts of creative writing, children will learn the details of character portrayal, plot, and description.
Advanced Creative Writing For students entering the 7th - 12th grades: Teenagers will be introduced to works of different writers and will learn how to experiment with writing. They will also be introduced to the art of journalism. Campers will be divided into two groups: Middle school and High school.
Beginning Academic Writing For students entering the 2nd and 3rd grade: Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of English and paragraph structure.
Advanced Beginner Academic Writing For students entering the 4th and 5th grade: Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of English and paragraph structure.
Intermediate Academic Writing For students entering the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade: Students will learn how write and revisit five paragraph essays and informational presentations.
Advanced Academic Writing For students entering the 9th, 10th 11th grade: Writing a good essay is the key to success for a high school student. Five paragraph essays on traditional topics is no longer enough. Participants in this camp will be prepared for high school.
Journalism For middle and high school students: Participants will learn the ropes of journalism and work on the Lekha summer newspaper. Campers will interview people from different walks of life and learn to research articles.

This summer Lekha is conducting camps at six locations including the head office in W. San Jose.
Location 1: 2000 Woodside Rd in Redwood City.
Participants will be using the multi purpose room attached to the school of Woodside United Methodist Church. Cradled amongst large redwood trees this location is perfect for children to let their creative juices flow. During lunch time and recess they have access to a play structure. This location is ideal for families living in Redwood city, San Mateo, Palo Alto, Burlingame, and neighbouring areas.
Location 2: 43 E. Gish Road, San Jose, CA 95112.
A 5000 sq ft commercial property, with ample place to play and run, this is beautiful place for children to excercise their creativity. Close to freeways I 880 and 101, this is an ideal location for families living in the Milpitas, Fremont, Berryessa , and Santa Clara areas among others.

Creative Writing Instructors
All creative writing instructors are published authors, poets, song writers, playwrites, or screenplay writers.
Academic Communication Instructors
Instructors teaching fundamental English are highly educated and credentialed educators teaching in either private schools or public schools.
All instructors have been TB tested and have had their backgrounds checked and fingerprinted using "Lifescan". Each location as at least one instructor trained in CPR at all times.

- High School Essay Writing

- Journalism

They will interview people from all walks of life and will work as a team on Lekha's first newspaper. Campers will use Adobe InDesign to design the paper.
- Poetry and Playwriting

As part of the camp, participants learn how to analyze writing methods of published poets and playwrites and format their work on a designated laptop. This session is the third in a series of four weeks of creative writing and it is recommended to take all four weeks even though it is a possible to take one week at a time. - SAT Prep(Language Arts only)

- Story Writing

Children learn about different genre and take home a portfolio of short stories with a good first draft of a story in the genre of their choice. This session is the second in a series of four weeks of creative writing and it is recommended to take all four weeks even though it is a possible to take one week at a time.
