A 2009 camper said, "This is the best camp I ever attended! Can I please go back next summer? PLEASE? Everyone there is so nice and the counselors are extremely smart!"

A 2009 parent said, "I like the mix —some technology, some sports— a more balanced day than other camps. The counselors do a great job of guiding, but let the kids have the creative leadership."

TIC has been the premiere technology & sports day camp in the Washington DC area for 27 years.  We offer a perfect balance of mind and body:  half a day of computers and half a day of athletics.  The camper's projects are chosen and designed by them.  We have brilliant and caring counselors from some of the best colleges and universities in the world, and we provide a 4:1 teaching ratio.  Four two-week sessions are available at three sites:  Washington, DC, Bethesda, MD and McLean, VA.

Technology Options: Programming, Robotics, Digital Arts, Web Design, Animation, Filmmaking, and Digital Music

WHAT IS TIC?

  • a day camp where kids learn by having fun!
  • superb technology instruction and vigorous athletics
  • a 4:1 camper/counselor ratio with smart, caring staff
  • unique projects created with real programming languages or multimedia software
  • exciting sports which develop social skills and good sportsmanship

Kids come to TIC not just to explore technology, but for a kind of personal attention, excitement and creativity rarely found elsewhere. Our half day sports program offers a physical challenge to balance the mental stimulation of the technology half day.

Campers are divided into two age groups: when the Juniors are in technology the Seniors are in sports; after lunch the groups switch places, so that each camper gets three hours of technology instruction and three hours of sports each day.

TIC has been accredited by the ACA and has flourished in the DC metropolitan area for 27 years!

Why TIC?

At TIC, kids get to:
  • choose their own goals in technology and sports;
  • develop their unique personal visions;
  • go as far and as fast as they want to.
TIC is not school—it's CAMP.

However, there are no merely passive experiences. The computer games they play they have written themselves—in LOGO, Visual Basic, C++, or Java! They don't just surf the Web—they create webpages using HTML or Javascript.  They digitally edit their own videos, use Flash to create animations, design their own graphics in Photoshop. They program their own robots, or compose digital music.

In athletics one of the three daily periods is a choice, and Seniors get to focus on their favorite sport for another hour each day. Tennis or drama may be chosen as an extra cost option.

AT TIC — KIDS LEARN BY HAVING FUN!

Camp Facilities

TIC Summer Camp uses air-conditioned indoor classrooms and excellent outdoor athletic facilities on each campus:

Camp Staff

The secret of TIC's success over 27 years is our wonderful staff. Our personal kind of teaching requires a high counselor to camper ratio: 1:4 in technology, 1:5 in athletics. TIC chooses staff for their talent, energy sensitivity, and desire to share their enthusiasms with kids.

Our counselors attend some of the best universities and colleges in the U.S. and around the world. They are highly skilled in technology or athletics. But it is their caring—about kids and about teaching—that makes them so effective and so adored by the campers.

Year Round Staff:

Karen Rosenbaum, Ph.D., founded Technology Instruction Corporation (TIC) in 1982, to do educational consulting —but camp soon took over! She served two terms as President of the American Camp Association (ACA) Virginias Section and is an ACA Standards Instructor and Visitor. Karen's new partner, Emily Riedel, M.B.A., directed TIC-MD last summer, is the Director for TIC-DC in 2010, and is our year-round Executive Director. Emily has a wealth of management experience: seven years at TIC and many years in the corporate world. Our registrar, Tabitha Glading, knows TIC after 15 years of handling enrollment availability, waiting lists, required forms, and payments.

TIC has been accredited by ACA for all of its 27 years, and is licensed as a camp by the state of Maryland. We have health care providers at each site, a doctor on call, and many staff members certified in First Aid and CPR.

Camp FAQs

Q: How are campers split by age?
Juniors are elementary school age kids (in TIC-MD, rising 2nd through 6th graders; at TIC-DC and TIC-VA, 2nd through 5th graders). Seniors are secondary age kids (in TIC-MD, rising 7th through 11th graders; at TIC-DC and TIC-VA, rising 6th graders and up). For campers "on the cusp," we will change their groups to keep friends together. The group designation is more important in sports than in technology. Because of our individualized instruction, campers will learn what they are ready for and proceed at their own pace in either Junior or Senior technology. In sports, it is important to play with other kids the same age and size.

Q: Why can't my preschooler or kindergartner come to camp?
A: Our program is appropriate only if campers know how to read, at least on a minimal level. Also, having been to first grade gives them the added socialization skills that are necessary for collaboration in the computer lab and teamwork on the field.

Q: Is it possible to go half days or for only one week in a session?
A: We don't recommend this, because you only experience our real "product" if you attend the full two weeks.

Q: Why should my child take programming?
A: We believe that programming is an essential part of learning to do anything really powerful and creative on the computer. The benefits are explained here. Many kids come to camp wanting to design "video games." That's what programming teaches!

Q: Can my child attend more than one session at a time or at different locations.
A: Campers may choose to do a different option in each TIC session they attend, or deepen their skills if they repeat a tech option in another session. Since the instruction is individualized, there is never any repetition— they learn only what they want or need at any point. You can choose from any one of our three campuses for any session or mix of sessions.
