BaySail is a leader in education and adventure under sail on the Great Lakes. In eleven years our two schooners have taken over 28,000 youths on exciting educational sailing expeditions.
Sailing aboard the 85 ft schooner Appledore IV or the 65ft schooner Appledore V Windward Boundis a highly unique voyaging program on the beautiful Great Lakes. Two types of voyages are offered: Seamanship and Freshwater Science. Seamanship voyages focus on learning the arts of traditional sailing such as pilotage and navigation, sail handling, watch keeping, and ship handling. Freshwater science voyages combine traditional sailing with study of Great Lakes habitats, aquatic species, shoreline geology, water quality, and nautical science.
Life onboard the schooner is comfortable. Each participant has their own bunk and a small amount of space for belongings. As the ship sails between ports participants stand a regular watch while learning every aspect of running the ship, from navigation to meal preparation. The ships anchor most nights in one of the thousands of secluded coves on the lakes, or occasionally visit a small port town. Voyage highlights include trips ashore in the ship's tenders, exploration of uninhabited islands, and possible all-night sails.
2009 voyages range from 5 to 9 days with voyages on Lake Huron, and Lake Erie. Van transportation from Bay City return included in all voyages.
The Appledore IV and Appledore V are licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard and are crewed by a licensed captain and mate, and two youth crew. Windward Bound is licensed by the State of Michigan as a youth travel camp.

Where are we going?
This will be a wilderness trip. We mostly go to wilderness locations, uninhabited islands, parks and the like. Our destinations are never fixed, things can change at any time based on many factors, the main one being weather. When we stop and anchor we will be a few thousand feet from shore. We can row our small boat to get to land. It holds four at a time. It is rare that we go to towns or marina docks. You will not need to bring much money to spend in stores. Some trips we will not stop near a store at all.
Do we sail at night?
Most nights we will anchor. There are times that we may sail all night but this is only under certain circumstances.
Is there a shower on board?
No. There are billions of gallons of fresh water in the lakes that can be used to keep clean. We can soap and shampoo when we swim, or even shower with a bucket while the boat is sailing along. It feels great on the hot afternoons.
Who cooks?
There is not a cook on board. We rotate the cooking duties. Everyone will help out in the galley every other day. There are four meals served each day, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Desert plus snacks. Popular meals we have had on past trips include: Pot Pies, Chili, Jambalaya, Lasagna, Burritos, Calzones, Mac + Cheese, Hamburgers, Pasta Salad, Caesar Salad, homemade Granola and the Cook Out, where we cook various things on sticks over an open fire on shore. There are also usually side dishes if you don’t like the main course. If
you have an idea for a recipe you would like to cook during the trip you can call the crew the week before to discuss it and they may be able to buy the ingredients for you. We are happy to have your ideas.
What is Watch and what do we do during watch?
Watch is the time we are on duty to help sail the ship. As a trainee you will be a full part of the crew and will be involved in all duties that you are capable of, including sail handling, navigation, steering, lookout, etc.
What can we do in our free time when not on watch?
Reading, taking pictures, napping, climbing, rope crafts, fishing or whatever you’d like.
Will I get seasick?
Maybe. If the weather is rough there a good chance that you will get seasick but lots of people do not get affected at all. If you are sick do not worry, though it may be very unpleasant it will not cause you any harm and as we are anchored most nights it will not last long. There are many treatments for seasickness. Here are some: looking at the horizon, nibbling crackers, nibbling ginger, singing, staying busy, steering, taking a motion sickness pill or going to sleep in your bunk.
What animals will we see?
On previous trips we have seen deer, otters, geese, ducks, muskrats, loons, cormorants, turns, bats, fish, crayfish, frogs and turtles, just to name a few.
What is heeling?
When the sails fill it is natural for a sailboat to lean a bit to one side, to heel.
What are the evening activities?
Hiking on shore, campfire on shore, games, learning knots and making rope crafts like bracelets, fishing, learning sailing skills, making desert. Being in the cabin together as a group in the evening is one our favorite times.
