Academic Treks, a division of Broadreach, offers college-accredited summer adventures abroad for high school students. Backed by fifteen years of experience in running educational programs for thousands of teenagers, Academic Treks combines the finest elements of experiential learning, traditional classroom learning and service learning with wilderness adventure, international travel and cultural exchange to create extraordinary expeditions.

On each dynamic journey, students explore unique environments and cultures while studying marine science or a foreign language or embarking on an intensive community service adventure. Each course includes an important community service component, and several include a significant emphasis (up to 55 hours) on service work. Academic Treks students are fully immersed in an educational experience in a real world setting, gaining a global perspective and hands-on understanding of the topics studied. They also get a head start on college by earning college and/or community service credit and by building a host of skills they will use both in school and beyond.

Interwoven in the Academic Treks experience are the themes of teamwork, leadership and personal growth. Together with your team of 9-12 adventurers, you will take on challenges, master new skills, build confidence and gain insights into yourself, the world around you and your role as a world citizen. You will leave with a sense of achievement, an awareness of your own potential and an acceptance of different ideas, beliefs and cultures.

Join Academic Treks this summer for an unforgettable adventure. Bring a thirst to learn and have fun, and a desire to open your heart and mind to new people, places and experiences. See the world in a different light, achieve things you never thought possible, make lasting friendships, and learn by doing and experiencing with incredible environments as your classrooms.

Camp Staff
Academic Treks leaders are top-notch - energetic, friendly, genuine, fun, well-educated and well-traveled. They share a love for working with young people, as well as a passion for experiential learning and teaching. Their Course Lead Instructors are hired for an area or areas of expertise, and most have had years of experience in outdoor adventure, the culture of their program country and/or the academic topics we pursue. The primary academic instructors have a master's degree or Ph.D. in their program's field of study. AT's first-rate instructors, intensive staff training and years of experience in running trips abroad sets Academic Treks apart from school trips and travel programs.

The AT course design requires them to use several instructors for each program. Two AT staff members lead the trip, providing focus and continuity to the program. Formal instruction is given by professional educators with experience teaching young adults through experiential and project-based learning. In-country outfitters are used to provide the local knowledge and expertise for expedition phases. These additional teachers and outfitters provide a perspective, depth of knowledge and access to resources that could not be obtained otherwise.

AT's Course Lead Instructors complete intensive staff training before the program at Broadreach headquarters, which includes a focus on risk management, in-country logistics, emergency protocols, leadership training and teaching students how to integrate experiences learned on program into their everyday lives when they return home. At least one of the course leaders is a certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR), Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with a minimum of 80 hours of emergency medical training.
